Spy Smasher. Alan Armstrong, an ace pilot and Virginian playboy of leisure, is the confidant of his fiancee Eve's father, Admiral Corby. Admiral Corby suspects the presence of spies in America and needs help catching them So Armstrong puts on a costume and uses his wits and his Gyrosub to hunt down the enemies of America as well as criminals. After the war he changed his name to Crime Smasher and concentrated on criminals. He is sometimes helped by Eve, who knows his secret identity, and by Captain Marvel. He has no superpowers, but is an expert pilot and has the Gyrosub, which combines "the functions of an airplane, auto gyro, speedboat, and submarine." Spy Smasher’s arch-enemy is the Mask, "master mind of America's most dangerous spy ring," but Spy Smasher also fights ordinary spies and saboteurs, evil scientists (hypno rays, death rays, etc), the America-Smasher, the femme fatale (and Spy Smasher’s Loving Enemy) Dark Angel, the Tigress, the Red Death, and the anti-democracy Blitzys. He appears in stories with titles like “Menace of the Magnetic Mine,” “The Hypno-Ray Affair,” and “Vikranz and the Death Ray.”
