Blackstone. Heavily influenced by Lee Falk’s Mandrake the Magician, Blackstone is a magician who uses stage magic, hypnosis (and occasionally something approaching real magic) in a series of fantastic adventures around the world. He is a middle-aged man with white hair and a black mustache who is assisted by the lovely Rhoda and the Indian “Pundab.” He appears in stories with titles like “The Thuggees of Kali,” “The Druids of Land’s End,” and “Blackstone Finds the Aztec Treasure.”

First Appearance: Super-Magic Comics #1 (Street & Smith), May 1941. 100+ appearances, 1941-1948. Created by Charles Sultan and Walter Gibson. Note: The stage magician Harry Blackstone, Sr. (1885-1965) was a famous stage magician whose fictional adventures were published by a number of different publishers, including Street and Smith, E.C., and Marvel.
