York, Inspector. Inspector York was created by Mary Durham and appeared in five novels from 1945 to 1948, beginning with Hate is My Livery.
Chief Inspector Randolph York of Scotland Yard is a “tall, pleasant faced man, with very few grey hairs in his fair head, and he looked younger than his forty-six years.” He is dreamy and not particularly sociable, but marriage to his wife (fourteen years younger than he, and vivacious) has made him more sociable rather than less. He is polite, intelligent, and has the manner of a What’s All This, Then, although York is more intelligent than most street cops.
