Yates, Lum. Lum Yates was created by “Collins Hafford,” a Street & Smith house name used in this case by Galen Colin (Tug Burton, Storm King, Lazy Lucas), and appeared 246 stories in Wild West Weekly from 1928 to 1934, beginning with “The Tenderfoot Cowboy” (Wild West Weekly, Feb, 4, 1928).

Lum Yates is a cowpuncher and hand for the Bar M Ranch, somewhere in the American southwest in the years after the Civil War. When trouble finds him, he’s ready to deal with it. Yates is from Missouri. He’s not particularly fast with his guns, and he is not very strong. But he is clever and is helped by his faithful friend Zeke and (better still) by his clever dog, Job, a small, scrawny mutt with an uncanny sense for trouble.
