Yang E. Yang E was created by “A Ying,” the pseudonym of the Chinese playwright Qian Xingcun, and appeared in the play Yang E Zhuan (1941).

After the fall of the Ming Dynasty and the flight of the Yongli emperor into Burma, one of the emperor’s guards, Zhang Xiaowu, sends his wife, Yang E, back to Kunming. But Zhang dies, and Yang’s sister Lianer becomes the favorite consort of the Qing commander Wu Sangui. Yang E joins the resistance and attempts to assassinate Wu, although she fails. She wastes away, and on her deathbed dreams of killing him.
