Witherall, Leonidas. Leonidas Witherall was created by “Alice Tilton,” the pseudonym of Phoebe Atwood Taylor (Asey Mayo), and appeared in a number of stories, eight novels, and a radio show from 1933 to 1947, beginning with “The Riddle of Volume Four” (Mystery League, Nov. 1933).
Leonidas Witherall, known to his friends as “Bill” because of his resemblance to William Shakespeare, is headmaster at a New England prep school. He supplements his income by writing thrillers and finding rare books for "the wealthier and lazier Boston collectors." In the course of his various businesses he encounters crime or finds dead bodies and is drawn into solving the crimes and helping to find and catch the criminals.
