Whitty, Dr. Dr. Whitty was created by “George A. Birmingham,” the pseudonym of James Owen Hannay (Reverend Meldon), and appeared in fourteen stories in The Magpie in 1912 and 1913; the stories were collected in The Adventures of Dr. Whitty (1913).
In Ballintra, a small town on the coast of Connacht, in Ireland, an acerbic young doctor, Dr. Whitty, cures the sick. He also solves curious cases, whether of a sailor, washed ashore, who seems to speak no known language or of the difficult sale of a set of buoys to the town.
