Whirlwind. The Whirlwind was created by Johnston McCulley (The Avenging Twins, Bat (II), Black Star, Jim Bodney, Crimson Clown, Captain Goodwin, Green Ghost, Richard Hughes, Man in Purple, Mongoose, Peter Noggins, Peanut Pete, Spider (I), Thubway Tham, Thunderbolt (I), Terry Trimble, Zorro) and appeared in seven stories in Thrilling Adventures from 1933 to 1935, beginning with “Alias the Whirlwind” (Thrilling Adventures, Dec. 1933).

The Whirlwind is a Costumed Avenger. In Mexico, near San Diego de Alcala, “in the year 17—,“ the forces of the government have a problem. “Who is this demon who calls himself Señor Whirlwind? Who is this El Torbellino, who robs travelers along El Camino Real, the King’s Highway, and even dares invade houses and inns?” The Whirlwind rides a huge black horse, wears a mask and is taunting and fearless. In reality he is Pedro Garzo, child of a noble Spanish family who left his home because of an argument with his father. He came to America and went to work in a poor inn. “An inn drudge one moment—and El Torbellino, The Whirlwind, the next. Thus did Pedro Garzo express the life he preferred—and gave nine-tenths of his loot to the poor.”
