Wheat, Whitney. Whitney Wheat was created by Jeremy Lane and appeared in four novels from 1944 to 1949, beginning with Death to Drumbeat.

Whitney Wheat is an amateur detective and the resident psychiatrist at a sanitarium along the Hudson River in New York State. He is “tall, with big shoulders and a long stride...he is in his mid-thirties, has dark hair, a face you don’t forget, a good smile, and eyes that are hard to explain...when he looks at you, you don’t think of eyes, but of the prospect of dealing with a straightforward, honest person.” He has a genial good humor and capable intelligence. Among his enemies is a Mad Scientist with a crazed, bloodthirsty menagerie.
