Wade, Smoke. Wade was created by Robert J. Hogan (Captain Combat, Greaseball Joe, G-8, Red Falcon, Secret Six, Wu Fang (III)) and appeared in sixty stories in several pulps from 1932 to 1944, beginning with “Wager Flight” (Air Trails (U.S.), Aug. 1931).

Smoke Wade is an air ace during World War One. “Lieutenant ‘Smoke’ Wade, Arizona born and raised, an inveterate gambler with the luck of the devil.” He has a drawl, a cowboy affectation (he wears a Colt in a side holster), and a ninth grade education. He is also a demon in the skies, death on the wing to the Germans. Wade flies a “pinto” Spad.
