The Voice (I). The Voice (I) was created by Eustace Hale Ball (Scarlet Fox) and appeared in The Voice on the Wire (1915); the novel was altered and filmed as a serial in 1917.

The Voice (I) is a Superhuman Mad Scientist. He is opposed by the Scientific Detective Shirley—Montague Shirley in the novel, John Shirley in the movie. In the novel The Voice is responsible for the deaths of a number of men. In the film, The Voice is a scientist named Laroux who gains various powers through occult and scientific means, including mummification, controlling disembodied hands, transplanting limbs, and the “Oriental Death Punch,” and uses his powers to advance the aims of the sect, the Black Seven.
