Velvet, Captain. Captain Velvet was created by “Edgar Franklin,” the pseudonym of Edgar Franklin Stearns (Mr. Hawkins), and appeared in four stories in The Cavalier in 1914, beginning with “Just a Friendly Revolution” (The Cavalier, Jan. 3, 1914).

Captain Velvet is a weathered, amoral, sixty-something Yankee freebooter and adventurer who makes his fortune abroad, funding revolutions (so as to turn a profit for himself), stealing, looting, and traveling the world.
