Vane, Dr. Dr. Vane was created by W.E. Johns (Biggles, Gimlet, Steeley, Worrals) and appeared in ten stories in The 20 Story Magazine in 1940 and 1941, beginning with “The Affair of the Barrage Balloons” (The 20 Story Magazine, Apr. 1940); the stories were collected in Dr. Vane Answers the Call (1950).

Dr. Augustus Vane is an inventor and criminologist who has devoted his life to the study of crime. He was educated at Eton, Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, and Heidelberg, and can speak and read twenty-three languages. During World War Two he offers his services to the counter-espionage branch of the British Intelligence Service, and uses his intelligence and skills to solve mysteries, including murders, caused by spies and traitors.
