van Cleve, Alan. Alan van Cleve was created by Raoul Whitfield (Ben Breed, Dion Davies, Donald Free, Jo Gar, Gary Greer, Ben Jardinn, Buck Kent, Captain MacLeod, Mel Ourney, Chuck Reddington, Bill Scott) and appeared in six stories in Black Mask in 1931 and 1932, beginning with “The Sky Club Affair” (Black Mask, Aug. 1931); the stories were collected as Killer’s Carnival (1931).
Alan van Cleve is a suave, worldly, upper class sportsman who solves crimes as an amateur detective.
