Turpin, Dick. Dick Turpin (1705-1739) was an English highwayman, and a vicious bully who used torture to get money from his victims. Despite this, he became a folk hero and appeared in numerous ballads and dime novels. A fictionalized version of Dick Turpin appeared in Dick Turpin Library #1-139 (1922-1930) and Dick Turpin Novels #1-6 (1935); Dick Turpin Library was reprinted in Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain through at least 1927.

The fictional Turpin is a light-hearted, sentimental and gracious Gentleman Bandit quite at odds with the historical person.
