Topper. Topper was created by Thorne Smith and appeared in two novels and three movies from 1926 to 1941, beginning with Topper: An Improbable Adventure.

Topper is a hapless hero adopted by the ghosts of Marion and George, two wry, irrepressible socialites. Wacky misadventures ensue.

* I'm including the Topper novels and movies in the Best of the Encyclopedia list because they are charming and fun. In certain respects Thorne Smith's work has aged poorly; the delight that 1920s and 1930s reading and viewing audiences took in seeing fictional character drink a lot of alcohol and get "hilariously" drunk is not something that a 2020s audience is going to partake of. And Thorne Smith's general style, though appealing to many, strikes others as contrived and working too hard to be funny. But the Topper novels are two of Smith's best work, and the Topper movies are simply charming. Recommended.
