Tolefree, Philip. Philip Tolefree was created by Robert A.J. Walling (Garstang) and appeared in twenty-three novels from 1932 to 1949, beginning with The Fatal Five Minutes.
Philip Tolefree is a private detective who takes a low-key and unpretentious approach toward solving crimes. He is a working man, rather than a gentleman detective, and is concerned with business, rather than leisure. He has a drab office, a secretary, and regular working hours, although many of his clients are wealthy. Tolefree’s Watson is a salesman named Farrar.
