Thubway Tham. Thubway Tham was created by Johnston McCulley (The Avenging Twins, Bat (II), Black Star, Jim Bodney, Crimson Clown, Captain Goodwin, Green Ghost, Richard Hughes, Man in Purple, Mongoose, Peter Noggins, Peanut Pete, Spider (I), Thunderbolt (I), Terry Trimble, Whirlwind, Zorro) and appeared in 144 stories in a number of pulps from 1918 to 1960, beginning with “Thubway Tham” (Detective Story Magazine, June 4, 1918).
Thubway Tham is a shiftless, grouchy little thief who speaks with a lisp (hence his name) and preys on the men and women who ride the subways in New York City. Tham’s home, as such, is Times Square, and he usually watches the foot traffic from a bench, puffing away on a cigarette and grousing to himself about everything under the sun. Tham is very skilled at his job and continually eludes Detective Craddock, who knows what Tham does and tries to catch him but never does. Tham is a crook, but he is not without a sense of justice, and many of those he victimizes are unpleasant and deserve to be stolen from. Thubway Tham meets, among others, the Crimson Clown, Amos Clackworthy, and Simon Trapp.
