Swan, Rev. Praxiteles. Rev. Praxiteles Swan was created by John W. Thomason, Jr. (John Houston) and appeared in eight stories in Saturday Evening Post from 1938 to 1941, beginning with “A Preacher Goes to Texas” (Saturday Evening Post, Apr. 23, 1938); the stories were collected in Lone Star Preacher (1941).

The Reverend Praxiteles Swan, known to Texans as “The Hurricane of God,” is a fiery, red-headed, brawling Methodist minister who survives Sharpsburg and Gettysburg–Swan is a Captain in the Confederate Army–as well as the backwaters and hostile provincials of rural America.
