Swan, C.J. C.J. Swan was created by “R. Philmore,” the pseudonym of Herbert Edward Howard, and appeared in five novels from 1934 to 1938, beginning with Journey Downstairs.

C.J. Swan is a polymathic English writer: “he seemed to be able to apply himself with equal success to propaganda for peace, to writing novels, to meeting people. Once, when he was younger, he had solved a murder case. He knew by heart the more obscure Slavonic novelists, the outstanding remarks at the last World Conference, and the Worcestershire batting order.” He is cynical, amusing, and energetic, and quite successful as an amateur crime-solver.
