Swamba. Swamba appeared in a number of stories in The Startler in 1930, beginning with “Swamba’s Singing Stick” (The Startler, June 21, 1930).

Swamba is a Zulu hero modeled on Umslopogaas (see: Allan Quatermain). Swamba is the son of Chaka and “the strongest of all the Zulus,” and uses a field hockey stick, gained from his “master,” Roddy Clarke, an Africa Hand and “freelance jungle policeman” for the British South African Police. Together Clarke and Swamba fight evil, both native and white.
