Sudden. Sudden was created by Oliver Strange and appeared in thirteen novels from 1930 to 1970, beginning with Range Robbers.
Sudden, a.k.a. Mr. Green, is a wandering cowboy on the western frontier of the United States in the decades after the Civil War. He is a tall, lithe man in his twenties, well-tanned and well-armed. Years before he had heard that the Governor of Texas was “lookin’ for a feller to weed out certain gangs o’desperadoes who were gettin’ too busy in the county,” so Green applied for the job. He was deputized and began taking care of various outlaws, but he doesn’t show people his badge, and so “I soon got a reputation as a bad man; every crime that couldn’t be otherwise explained was plastered on me.” The Governor is aware of this, and with Sudden’s agreement lets the situation stand, as it helps Sudden in dealing with criminals. He is a chivalrous man and is good with both fists and guns.
