Street Thug. The Street Thug was created by the Egyptian author Yusuf Abu Haggag and appeared in the serial “Mudhakkirat Fitiwwa” (Lisan al-Sha`b, 1928).
The Street Thug is an Egyptian criminal who engages in any number of street-level crimes: he crashes wedding parties to steal the presents, he gets into bloody and vicious fights with other thugs and street gangs, he drinks “whiskey-cognac,” smokes hashish, and snorts cocaine, and he frequents prostitutes. (He also fights British soldiers during the 1919 revolution). He is arrested and jailed numerous times but never learns better, and by serial’s end he is as much a thug as he was at the serial’s beginning.
