Strangeways, Nigel. Nigel Strangeways was created by "Nicholas Blake," the pseudonym of Cecil Day Lewis, and appeared in sixteen novels from 1935 to 1966, beginning with A Question of Proof.

Nigel Strangeways is an Oxford-educated private detective whose uncle is assistant commissioner at Scotland Yard. Although Strangeways is highly educated and sometimes uses his knowledge to solve crimes he more often relies on clues and his own astute sense of character. He is tall, lean, blue-eyed, and deceptively innocent-looking.
