Spartacus. Spartacus (c. 109-71 B.C.E.) was a gladiator and slave who led an unsuccessful slave revolt. He also appeared in the Italian author Raffaello Giovagnoli’s Spartaco (1874) and three movies from 1913 to 1916.

In the novel and first film he is portrayed with relative historical accuracy, but in the second and third films he becomes Spartacus’ modern descendant, an adventurer and enforcer of order and justice against bad men.
