Smithers, Saxophone. Saxophone Smithers was created by Robert H. Rohde (Great Macumber) and appeared in four stories in Detective Fiction Weekly in 1928, beginning with “The Pearly Gates Racket” (Detective Fiction Weekly, Aug. 25, 1928).

Saxophone Smithers is a Con Man. Smithers is the “Swindler de Luxe,” a charming rogue whose whiskers flutter when he’s smiling and who changes names and disguises with ease. But Smithers is sentimental and is happy to help women in peril.
