Smith, Ugly. Ugly Smith was created by Bob Du Soe (Jake McCarver) and appeared in a number of stories in Far East Adventure Stories in 1931 and possibly 1932, beginning with “The Galley Admiral” (Far East Adventure Stories, Mar. 1931).

Ugly Smith is a South Seas Adventurer. He is “mate, steward, and sometimes even cook” on the schooner Lalanai, owned by “old man Stovall.” Ugly is scrawny, “big-eared, pug-nosed,” and hot-tempered, but he’s a good sailor. His best friend is the enormous Maori Kamaka, “the culmination of bland good humor.” Smith and Kamaka fight evil white men, the weather, and assorted dangerous natives.
