Smith, Shanghai. Shanghai Smith was created by Morley Roberts (Captain Spink) and appeared in “The Settlement with Shanghai Smith” (The Saturday Evening Post, Nov 1, 1902) and “Three in a Game” (The Saturday Evening Post, Feb. 14, 1903).
Shanghai Smith is a roughhewn sailor who has “the devil” in him, which has led him to win innumerable fistfights, own a bar, and become “the terror of ‘the Coast’ and of sailor men, and a political power in his quarter of the city.” Naturally, with these attributes, adventure and grudges with captains and other seamen do not wait long to find him.
