Smith, Peabody. Peabody Smith was created by William J. Flynn and George Barton (Bromley Barnes) and appeared in “The Adventures of Peabody Smith” (Argosy All-Story Weekly, Oct. 28-Nov. 25, 1922).

Peabody Smith is a private detective. He used to work for the Secret Service, specializing in counterfeiting cases. He is known as the “Yankee Detective,” because he was born on Cape Cod “and never fully recovered from it.” He is “tall, lean, and sinewy, and when he arose always seemed to go through the process of uncurling his legs. He was a combination of aristocrat and democrat…he had a face that was habitually sad, a melancholy face, the face of a funeral director.” He is assisted by the younger and much more jocular Tim Burke.
