Smith, Northwest. Northwest Smith was created by C.L. Moore (The Baldies, Jirel of Joiry) and appeared in thirteen short stories from 1933 to 1940, beginning with “Shambleau” (Weird Tales, Nov. 1933); his stories were collected in Shambleau and Others (1953) and Northwest of Earth (1954).

In the distant future Northwest Smith is a pale-eyed adventurer whose “name is known and respected in every dive and wild outpost on a dozen wild planets.” He is callous and pragmatic, and is a “cautious man, despite his reputation,” but he constantly encounters beautiful alien women in trouble and always decides to help them. This always proves to be a mistake.
