Smith, John (II). John Smith (II) was created by Wyatt Blassingame (Bishop, Joe Fall, Allen Foster, Joe Gee, Ghost (II), Necessary Jones, Thin Man) and appeared in twenty stories and story serials in Detective Tales from 1937 to 1943, beginning with “He Killed in Darkness” (Detective Tales, June 1937); most of the stories were collected in John Smith Hears Death Walking (1944).

John Smith (II) is a Superhuman. He is a wealthy, well-known private detective in New Orleans. He was blinded while in college and spent ten years without sight, during which time he developed his other senses to a superhuman level. An operation restored his sight, and since then he has used all of his senses to investigate crime, many of which, as befits New Orleans, have Gothic overtones.
