Smith, Don Alvarado y Miraflo. Don Alvarado y Miraflo Smith was created by Rex Hardinge (Sexton Blake, Dixon Hawke) and appeared in a number of stories in Detective Weekly in 1937, beginning with “The Mystery of the Polite Pirate” (Detective Weekly, Oct. 23, 1937).
Don Alvarado y Miraflo Smith is a “globe-trotting detective, an olive-skinned, languid, immaculate mountain of a man,” from Panama but of noble Spanish descent, and a gentleman adventurer of the world. He is suave, debonair, and clever in pursuit of criminals.
