Slade, Jack. Jack Slade was created by “Richard Essex,” the pseudonym of Richard Starr (Marcus Buller, Maxim Law, Lessinger), and appeared in fourteen stories and story serials and four novels and story collections from 1933 to 1937, beginning with “The Secret Seven” (Mystery, Aug. 1933).

Jack Slade is a What’s All This, Then. John Darrell, M.P. shames himself while drunk and reinvents himself as Inspector John “Jack” Slade of Scotland Yard’s H Section, “the acknowledged hottest and toughest” area in London. Darrell’s manservant is the very efficient Cossack. He occasionally teams up with Lessinger.
