Score, Jay. Jay Score was created by Eric Frank Russell and appeared in four stories in Astounding Science Fiction from 1941 to 1943, beginning with “Jay Score” (Astounding Science Fiction, May, 1941); the stories were collected in Men, Martians and Machines (1955).
In the future Jay Score is a logical and very human-seeming android (formal name “J-20") on the ship Upskadaska City, affectionately known as the “Upsydaisy” by its crew, which includes Captain McNulty, the nameless sergeant who is the stories’ narrator, and Kli Yang, Kli Morg, Sug Farn, and the other tentacled, chess-loving Martians on the Upskadaska City. Together the group explores a number of solar systems, encountering malevolent aliens of very different forms on different planets.
