Schmidt, Inspector. Inspector Schmidt was created by “George Bagby,” the pseudonym of Aaron Marc Stein (Tim Mulligan and Elsie Mae Hunt) and appeared in fifty-one novels from 1935 to 1981, beginning with Murder at the Piano.

Inspector Schmidt is a detective with the N.Y.P.D. Homicide Bureau. He is intelligent, thorough in his investigations, and sometimes lapses into Runyon-esque dialogue. He is Watsoned by George Bagby, a newspaper reporter and Schmidt’s “ghostwriter.”
