Sawyer, Lieutenant. Lieutenant Sawyer was created by Harry Chandlee and George Terwilliger and appeared in the film The Nation’s Peril (1915).

Lieutenant Sawyer is a proud, patriotic officer in the U.S. Navy and an amateur inventor, but when he creates an “aerial torpedo” his fiancée, Ruth Lyons, granddaughter of an U.S. Navy Admiral, is appalled—she’s a pacifist who believes in peace at any price. Lyons allows herself to be persuaded by Oswald Dudley to give him the plans to the aerial torpedo. Dudley then reveals himself to be the agent of a Teutonic foreign power. Lyons stabs Dudley to death and Sawyer uses the aerial torpedo to sink an enemy fleet which has just entered the harbor at Newport.
