Saumarez, Sir John. Sir John Saumarez was created by the Australian author Helen Simpson and “Clemence Dane,” the pseudonym of the Australian author Winifred Ashton, and appeared in a story serial and three novels and story collections from 1928 to 1932, beginning with “Enter Sir John” (Cosmopolitan, Sept. 1928).

Sir John Saumarez is a prominent, older actor in London who solves crimes in his spare time. The well-respected Saumarez is a “man slim, languid, and perfectly tailored; and Sir John’s pronunciation, gestures, and, it must be confessed, innumerable affectations were law in the little company...this it is to be a leader in the most imitative of all professions.”
