Robert & Bertrand. Robert & Bertrand were created by “Koen Ravenstein,” the pseudonym of the Belgian author Raf Verhulst, and appeared in Nieuwe Avonturen Van Robert En Bertrand De Moderne Vagebonden #1-5? (1924); the series was reprinted in Poland in 1924.

Robert & Bertrand are Con Men. “Robert Macaire” was the name of a villainous knight in a 14th century French work on hunting, and became a common synonym for a villain. He appeared as a villain and swindler in numerous plays and novels in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Nieuwe Avonturen Robert Macaire and his acolyte Bertrand are a pair of wandering scoundrels who cheat, lie, and steal their way across contemporary Europe, pursued by police Agent No. 17.
