Renard, Julian. Julian Renard was created by “Lee Thorne,” the pseudonym of Thornton T. Shively, and appeared in eight stories in Doc Savage and Doc Savage Science Detective from 1945 to 1947, beginning with “The Shock Punch” (Doc Savage, June 1945).

Julian Renard is a Disabled Detective Great Detective heavily modeled on Nero Wolfe. Renard is paralyzed from the waist down and is confined to a wheelchair, but has Wolfe’s bulk and attitude and an Archie-like sidekick, Roger Bannister, who is “mostly brawn.” But, despite the wheelchair, Renard is much more mobile than Wolfe is or intends to be.
