Rem. Rem was created by H.S. Canfield and appeared in four stories in The Saturday Evening Post in 1903, beginning with “The Chronicles of Rem” (The Saturday Evening Post, Apr 4, 1903).

Rem is a squat, hardened, sixty-something lumberjack living in solitude in the north country of Wisconsin. He has only his yellow cat Tom for company. Rem has forty years’ experience as a lumberjack, and tells stories when in the mood, about life in the camps, the berserkers of the northwest, the value of a good cook, why fighting is disallowed in the camps, and so on.
