Red Sword. Red Sword was created by “John Drummond,” the pseudonym of John Newton Chance (Superintendent Black, Sexton Blake, John Newton Chance, Evelyn DeHavilland), and appeared in seven stories in The Thriller and Popular Detective from 1940 to 1945, beginning with “Gestapo Spy Trap” (The Thriller, Mar. 9, 1940).
The “Red Sword” is a British agent active in Nazi Germany. He is a wry, deadly, self-assured redhead who goes undercover as German Army officers and Gestapo agents. He is quick with his hands but prefers to use the sword, his favorite weapon. He is actually R.A.F. Squadron-Leader Daunton, formerly a movie star.
