Red Hawk. Red Hawk was created by “George Owen Baxter,” the pseudonym of Frederick Faust (Dan Barry, Blackie & Red, Border Bandit, Angus Campbell, Dave Clovelly, Jim Curry, Ronicky Doone, Firebrand (I), James Geraldi, Anthony Hamilton, Bull Hunter, Kid Montana, Doctor Kildare, King Charlie, Reata, Silvertip (II), Thunder Moon), and appeared in War Party (1934), Frontier Feud (1935), and Cheyenne Gold (1972).
Rusty Tobin is only three when his mother is killed by a Cheyenne war party and he is taken in by them and raised as one of their own. His Cheyenne name is “Red Hawk,” but he is a great disappointment to Spotted Antelope, his adoptive father, since Red Hawk takes no delight in the scalp dance, spends too much time with Lazy Wolf, the tribe’s white interpreter, and shies away from the bloody initiation into manhood. When that finally comes, Red Hawk cannot go through with it, shaming himself in his own eyes and those of the tribe. So he is forced to spend time among white men, using his innate traits and the skills learned with the Cheyenne to do good and regain a sense of self-esteem. Eventually he learns his birth name and is reunited with his father, although he continues to think of the Cheyenne as his people.
