Reade, Tom. Tom Reade was created by H. Irving Hancock (Dave Darrin, Li Shoon, Frank Manley, Motor Boat Club, Dick Prescott, Square Dollar Boys, Uncle Sam's Boys) and appeared in the six-book “Young Engineers” series, beginning with The Young Engineers in Colorado, or, At Railroad Building in Earnest (1912) and concluding with The Young Engineers on the Gulf, or, the Dread Mystery of the Million-Dollar Breakwater (1921).

Tom Reade and his best friend Harry Hazelton began as friends of Dick Prescott but grew up a few years and became young engineers. In that role they travel to Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico, and southern California, laying track, fighting crime, shoring up mines, and building dams.
