Ray Mon Hai. Ray Mon Hai appeared in a number of stories in The Startler from 1930 to 1932, beginning with “Pals With a Shark” (The Startler, Sept 20, 1930).

Ray Mon Hai is a South Seas Adventurer. “Ray Mon Hai” is actually Raymond Hay, a young Britisher who grew up on the uncharted South Seas island of Mai Tan with his father and the natives of Mai Tan. Naturally, Raymond is looked upon by the villagers as their protector and lucky mascot, for his skills in the sea are much greater than theirs, and Raymond has befriended Gooloo, a shark, who Raymond rides bareback, wearing only a grass skirt. Raymond and Gooloo have the usual variety of South Seas adventures.
