Ranny Kid. The Ranny Kid was created by Clee Woods and appeared in eighty-six stories in Wild West Weekly and Popular Western from at 1927 to 1936, beginning with “A Reckoning at Apache Bow” (Wild West Weekly, Dec. 3, 1927).

The Ranny Kid is a Killer Vigilante. Crosby Sheppard is an ordinary cowpuncher who gets on the wrong side of Ad Bland, “who was the money king and overlord of Caliente Valley.” Life then goes wrong for Crosby, and one of his older brothers is killed in an ambush. Sheppard takes this the wrong way and becomes an outlaw, the “Ranny Kid.” As the Ranny Kid he begins hunting down first the assassins who killed his older brother and then Ad Bland himself.
