Range Riders. The Range Riders were created by Oscar Friend and appeared in eighty-two stories in Range Riders and Range Riders Western from 1938 to 1953, beginning with “The Long Noose” (Range Riders, Dec. 1938).
The Range Riders are Steve Reese, Joshua “Dusty” Trail, and Henry “Hank” Ball. They are “range detectives” for the Cattleman’s Protective Association of Austin. They report to Colonel George Beauvine. Reese is the leader of the three; he is a college graduate and was a police lieutenant in St. Louis. He is tall, broad-shouldered, and distinguished-looking, but he speaks like an ordinary cowpoke. Joshua Jeremiah “Dusty” Trail loves cheap cigars and is short, fat, and sleepy-lazy. Henry “Hank” Bascom Ball is a lean, lanky, wild, loyal, fiery freckled redhead with a “keen, hair-trigger brain”.
