Quid, Captain. Captain Quid was created by “Gurney Slade,” the pseudonym of Stephen Bartlett, and appeared in “The Chronicles of Captain Quid” (Chambers’s Journal, Nov. 1939-July 1940).

Richard Danesville Quid, a.k.a. Captain Quid, is the captain of the lugger Dugong in Lorne, a small pearling port on Australia’s northern coast. He is laconic, smart, and two-fisted, and is quite capable of handling anything with ease, from Japanese pearlers sending money back to the government to pretty American actresses looking to him for help.
