Quest, Peter. Peter Quest was created by John Kobler and appeared in four stories in Dime Mystery Magazine in 1938 and 1939, beginning with “The Merchant of Damnation” (Dime Mystery Magazine, Oct. 1938).
Peter Quest is a Disabled Detective. His disability is glaucoma: "he was heading inescapably for eternal darkness...nothing could save him." The attacks of blindness come at the worst possible time for Quest, leading him to develop a death wish. Quest fears blindness above all else, and faced with encroaching blindness, "the reckless, world-weary, embittered man whose name is already a legend among the annals of New York crime," acts recklessly, solving crimes and emerging unscathed despite his fearless approach to danger and criminals.
