Prentice. Prentice was created by “Francis James,” the pseudonym of James A. Goldthwaite, and appeared in twelve stories and story serials in Black Mask from 1922 to 1926, beginning with “The Sand Devil” (Black Mask, Oct. 1922).

Prentice is an upper-class criminologist, trained at Harvard, who has joined the police force and solves crimes as a Central Office Man. He is assisted by Chief of Police Shannon. Several of his stories verge on the occult.
