Poker, Juan. Juan Poker was created by Tom W. Blackburn (Christian Defever) and appeared in sixteen stories in 10 Story Western Magazine from 1943 to 1948, beginning with “Juan Poker’s Pilgrimage” (10 Story Western Magazine, Jan 1943).

Juan Poker is a Mexican-American cowboy and shootist on a “one-man battle for justice and peace among the mixed peoples who farmed and mined and built cities on the edge of the Pacific.” In California, not long after it becomes a U.S. Territory, shady adventurer John Poker (called “Juan Poker” by the Mexican-Californians) wanders, getting into adventures and hiring out to whoever pays him, even the U.S. government when it wants to take down a criminal mastermind.
